A.R. PENCK

This catalogue, published on the occasion of the eponymous exhibition at the gallery from 4 November to 7 January 2012, presents the most recent paintings by A.R. Penck. Ffuit of four years of work since 2007, Between Fire and Ice gives us the latest pictorial investigations of the artist, in his constant back and forth between abstraction and figuration, between expressing his own feelings and didactic construction.
The 23 paintings that make up this exhibition reflect the artistic maturity that the German artist has reached today.  They show the level of accomplishment he has achieved in his painting which remains expressionistic yet with much more limited movements than that of the earlier years. All this while remaining within the framework of his pictorial theories, which are no longer limited to his initial, essentially idiomatic artistic quest. More than 30 years after his move to the West, the artist seems to have finally gained some peace of mind !
The catalogue is accompanied by a poem and reflections by the artist, in german, french and english.

FABRICE HYBER

Inventions

This catalogue, published on the occasion of the eponymous exhibition at the gallery from 9th September to 27th October 2011, presents the most recent paintings by Fabrice Hyber.  Four years after Matière à penser, the exhibition that he designed in collaboration with researchers from M.I.T. for the inauguration of Le Laboratoire in Paris, a year after Pasteur’ Spirit, the first exhibition of a contemporary artist at the world center of biomedical research, Fabrice Hyber continues today his analysis of connections between art and science to return to the source of what drives these two domaines : creation and « inventions »…

In the art world as in the scientific world, nothing is final. Any established notion is immediately absorbed, contradicted, expanded or developped. In the nature that he defines as « un fonctionnement »(a mechanism), Fabrice Hyber considers his art in the framework of a constant questionning of accepted notions, with a perpetual topological reasoning that integrates his environment resulting in new recipes and new behaviors by the principles of deformation and transformation.
He goes beyond the mère creation of inventions in these works to let us see where the inventions come from and how they are born.

The catalogue is accompanied by bilingual texts in both French and English by Pascal Rousseau, Professor of History of Art at the Université Paris 1 Panthéon – Sorbonne.

GEORGE CONDO

Cartoon Abstractions

For his third solo exhibition at the gallery which has been representing him for ten years now, George Condo has created a brand-new group of paintings inspired by cartoon characters from the 1950s and 1960s. This new series marks a turning point in George Condo’s work although it still carries on seamlessly his research into painting, which lies somewhere between realism and abstraction. Inspired mainly by Tex Avery, Hanna-Barbera and Looney Tunes characters - some of them now forgotten – George Condo shows here the original outlines of these characters which are used as the central starting point for his painting, extending the black outlines which sketch out their contours in order to produce an abstract composition which will cover the remainder of the canvas…
The analysis developed by the French art critic and curator Eric Troncy highlight  the different references and inspiration sources within History of Art  as  well  as contemporary  culture.

PIERRE et GILLES

Wonderful Town

This catalogue, published on the occasion of the eponymous exhibition at the gallery from November 27, 2009 to January 23, 2010, presents the latest works created by the artists between 2007 and 2009, as part of a unique universe : Wonderful Town

Wonderful Town is one of those towns you can find anywhere in the world… It’s a modern town with no past, an industrial town”. To escape from the harshness of reality, city-dwellers feel the need to invent dreams, fantasies and acts of folly…In this decor of worksite machinery, factories, rubbish, all the people here have to invent their own world. A bit like in a film, Wonderful Town is an imaginary world where a lot of things happen, happy or sad, gentle or violent”

Inspired by cinema more than ever, Pierre et Gilles found a fantastic freedom for creation in this new world which allows them to tackle all themes and characters, and consider all composition types. In this universe with numerous facets, cheerful marines rub shoulders with saint martyrs, wonderful comes out of suffering and difficulty…

Thus Wonderful Town reflects Pierre et Gilles’ creations eclecticism in a perfect way, and unveils the mastery they have acquired in their specific style, allowing us to see more and more complex scenes with pictural decors.

VALERIE BELIN

VALERIE BELIN

Valérie Belin’s three series of portraits no longer pick out a given photographic aesthetic, but as for paintings, they belong to a dreamlike vision, to a specific interpretation of the subject, that of the artist. By giving her the possibility of changing the impression and support technique, of choosing between colour and black & white depending on the effect of the sought-after meaning, the contemporary technological tools led the artist to consider photography over and above its analogical nature, as means of creating a pure image.
The characters of these series created in 2007/2008 are dedicated to the image, as the Lido dancer and the magicians, all actors of a show.

JEFF KOONS

Jeff Koons - Versailles

Published on the occasion of the exhibition of Jeff Koons’ in the Kings’ great apartments in Versailles, Jeff Koons Versailles is a course in the "landscape - territory" of Versailles. In it’s first part , the book follows the radical principle of the exhibition: a work, a room. The second part aims to stimulate thinking by proposing a confrontation between the castle’s room  where the work is exhibited and the work out of context.

Jeff Koons appeared on the international art scene in the 1980’s . He becomes the American reference . He likes to reinterpret objects as in " Puppy" , where a plaster dog is decked out with flowers. He uses rabbits, inflatable toys, balloons. His works, full of colors and images, are  inspired by the advertising and by the consumer society. He creates the famous sculptures of Michael Jackson and the Pink Panther. Considered the master of kitsch, Jeff Koons is close to the Dada movement and to Andy Warhol.

BETTINA RHEIMS

Just like a woman

In this catalogue, Bettina Rheims unveils her series entitled Just like a woman realized in Paris in January 2008. These 13 colour portraits of women take us to the very essence of the French photographer’s art.
Recumbent on sheets splashed with colour, the women in this series remind us the models of Chambre Close, who posed on different backgrounds of coloured wallpapers; in the same way, here each sheet corresponds to a woman.
By shooting her models from above for the first time, thus placing them during the shooting in a closer and more intimate relationship with herself, Bettina Rheims seems to capture these women while awakening in the morning, or in a moment in between, a “beautiful agony” between ecstasy and suffering… Only the expression in their eyes might guide us in understanding their intimate feelings in this fleeting moment.

A.R. PENCK

A.R. Penck - Peintures et bronzes

This catalogue presents 24 paintings of the big German artist a.r. Penck, created specially for his exhibition at the gallery from November 23 to January 26, 2008 The 4 bronzes sculptures from the 90´s shown in the exhibition are also included in this opus.

Through 24 paintings, Penck moves away from any conceptions that are either illusionists or too close to the real and evolves into synthetic figures and landscapes, reduced to a set of abstract forms in a deliberately primitive graphic style, thus showing a clearly visible difference with his former paintings.
The subjects of inspiration are numerous and mix realties, thoughts and feelings, sometimes within one sole work. The artist makes the increasingly synthetic figure evolve more and more towards its structural essence, i.e. towards the form.

These paintings remind us that, behind the appearance of an ideal world, despair, loneliness and incest hide.

BETTINA RHEIMS

Heroines

The 23 portraits of women of this series, realized in 2005 and exhibited at the gallery in 2006, are those of 23 women with an off-beat beauty, photographed in a very sober setting, almost monochromatic grey, with a stone/base as only relief; a stone with which the models had to compose on the artist’s demand: “it is your stone, it is all what is left to you in the world…”
This new series marks the accomplishment of Bettina Rheims’ deep desire to establish a link with sculpture in its photographic creation, translating the idea that “one could see the back of the people that one sees facing”; like if suddenly the portrayed models were visualized in 3D.
Being raised among works of art, the artist was stunned by the look at antique marbles, of Michelangelo’s Slaves in the Offices Gallery in Florence, by Rodin’s bronzes, wherein bodies seem to burst out of the stone, a gush that she intended to transcribe in this series of photos.

PIERRE et GILLES

PIERRE ET GILLES - Le Grand Amour

Conceived by the artists on the occasion of their exhibition Le Grand Amour (The Great Love) by the fall 2004 at the Galerie Jérôme de Noirmont, this catalogue includes most of Pierre et Gilles’ works created from 2001 through 2004, with smiling portraits, these of children, of religious topics, or like their self-portrait as clowns, and also with darker visions, of slaves, of lost-around sailor, or like those inspired by The Black Dahlia.
Jean-Jacques Aillagon, by then French Minister of Culture, and Eric Troncy, art critic and curator, have written two very personal and relevant essays about Pierre et Gilles’ work and world, focusing on their latest works. The art critic Frédéric Blanc, as for him, especially focuses on the series Exil Intérieur, that shows a subtle turning point in the work of the artists.
Along its 120 colour pages, the reader will have the pleasure to discover that the wide field open by Le Grand Amour invites to an imaginative journey, a fantasy, a thought…

GEORGE CONDO

Memories of Manet and Velazquez

The 26 paintings on canvas of this series, exhibited at the gallery in 2004, mark an essential step in the artist’s journey within the History of Art.
In this series, Condo decodes the structure of the paintings of the great masters whom he admires, and focuses on the symbolic character of the compositions, like on the large diagonals of David’s heroic portraits or on the role of the shadows within Manet’s and Velasquez’ paintings.
Thanks to this analysis, Condo manages to capture the expressive power and the message of these works, of which he reinterprets the compositional structure to apply it then to its characters, notably to the Cardinals.
Their physiognomy concentrates in them all the grotesque of an epoch that Condo is reflecting, reminding us so that the artist goes back into the past to go further into the future.

DAVID MACH

DAVID MACH - STRAIGHT UP

This catalogue presents the works, always more spectacular, of the Scottish artist David Mach, created in 2003 on the occasion of his exhibition Straight Up at the gallery.
The illustration on the cover page featuring a Grizzly Little Fucker, a fluffy rabbit armed to the teeth, immerses the onlooker right away into the playful but extravagant and innovative world of this artist, much appreciated by the public and art collectors alike.
In the same eccentric vein, strange gargoyles (Gargoyles), mutant and droll re-interpretations of medieval monsters, get hold of the most disparate objects in the most incongruous postures. The striking contrast between the softness that is associated with the toys and the comical violence that they display is simply hilarious.
Everything that David Mach undertakes is sculpture. No matter if he uses empty cans, tyres, coathangers, resin, matchsticks, furniture or does collage work, the unconventional use of objects and the ironic diversion of the senses have always been at the centre of David Mach´s artistic approach, by servicing an unlimited creativity and inventiveness.
As a proof of David Mach´s savoir-faire, the unique destiny of these metal coathangers that David Mach twistes with the precision of a goldsmith to transform them into artworks, giving them a human form in three gigantic works viz. Arm´s Length, Straight Up and Laid Back
This catalogue also contains David Mach´s last Animal Matchheads, that the artist creates with an incredible technical expertise, and that always enthral children and adults alike, with their lively colours.

A.R. PENCK

A.R. PENCK - EREIGNISSE IM UNBEKANNTEN

This catalogue introduces 30 works on paper exhibited at the gallery in 2003. A.R. Penck offers with Ereignisse im Unbekannten (Events in the Unknown) magnificent examples of his proposition of a universal artistic language, initiated as soon as 1964 with the concept of Standart, a system of codification of information, of its representation and of its communication.
Penck unveils us through these works his questionings about the boundaries of the human mind, about the way man addresses the unknown. He scrutinizes, unsettles and analyses what makes man go forward, what pushes him in its own overtakings, Penck being at once a visual artist, a musician and a poet.

GEORGE CONDO

GEORGE CONDO - PHYSIOGNOMICAL ABSTRACTION

Published at the occasion of Condo’s first personal exhibition at the gallery in 2001, this catalogue unveils us how the artist’s figurative paintings relate to abstraction. The works exhibited actually cope with a gesture painting liberated thanks to the automatic thinking process used by the artist in this series. Condo puts so aside several portraits very freely to achieve partly abstract paintings, within a very fragmented composition, where external appearance and internal state of mind mix together. So is Condo representing the nature of the present human condition, as he feels and observes it.

REVINNIIR ZAGAIZZ

This catalogue, conceived with the artist as a sketch book, presents a metallic cover echoing stainless steel, a material used in numerous sculptures of the artist. Moreover, it includes a splendid essay - Brigitte Nahon, Thoughts sewn with Thread and Water - by the art critic Catherine Francblin, which celebrates the artist’s meditation on her sculpture, existing only « on the verge of the accident ».
Her 19 drawings, realised during the summer 1999 in New York City illustrate the conception and the setting of the works and take us to Le Passage, her sculpture made out of water, light and steel, concomitantly set up on the Champs - Elysées within the exhibition Les Champs de la Sculpture 2000.

KEITH HARING

kEITH HARING : 12 SCULPTURES

This catalogue, playful and with red gloss finish like the artist’s sculptures, constitutes a real reference in the literature on Keith Haring: it is the very first catalogue devoted only to his sculpture, published on the occasion of the exhibition dedicated by the gallery to Keith Haring, almost 10 years after his death.
Deeply convinced of the existence of a tight link between art and life, Haring always wished that his creations would impregnate our daily lives. Inspired by Calder, Dubuffet and even Tinguely, sculpture was another medium to allow him to enter even more in contact with the people. He liked to observe people’s response to his sculptures and to see “how they would use them”.

FRANCESCO CLEMENTE

THE PAINTINGS OF THE GATE

This very beautiful catalogue with an original design offers the extraordinary opportunity to discover the series The Paintings of the Gate, paintings realized by Clemente in Taos, New Mexico, in 1996, and exhibited at the gallery in 1997. The style of the catalogue honours the artist’s genuine and sophisticate work; with its lined curtain cover on which the painter’s name is engraved, it seems handmade.

The essay Les Portes de la Peinture (The Gates of Painting) by the writer and art theorician Démosthènes Davvetas places Clemente in the XXth Century artistic context, bringing out the origins of his creation to focus his analysis on the series.
