Wonderful Town

This catalogue, published on the occasion of the eponymous exhibition at the gallery from November 27, 2009 to January 23, 2010, presents the latest works created by the artists between 2007 and 2009, as part of a unique universe : Wonderful Town

Wonderful Town is one of those towns you can find anywhere in the world… It’s a modern town with no past, an industrial town”. To escape from the harshness of reality, city-dwellers feel the need to invent dreams, fantasies and acts of folly…In this decor of worksite machinery, factories, rubbish, all the people here have to invent their own world. A bit like in a film, Wonderful Town is an imaginary world where a lot of things happen, happy or sad, gentle or violent”

Inspired by cinema more than ever, Pierre et Gilles found a fantastic freedom for creation in this new world which allows them to tackle all themes and characters, and consider all composition types. In this universe with numerous facets, cheerful marines rub shoulders with saint martyrs, wonderful comes out of suffering and difficulty…

Thus Wonderful Town reflects Pierre et Gilles’ creations eclecticism in a perfect way, and unveils the mastery they have acquired in their specific style, allowing us to see more and more complex scenes with pictural decors.

Jean-Jacques Aillagon, by then French Minister of Culture, and Eric Troncy, art critic and curator, have written two very personal and relevant essays about Pierre et Gilles’ work and world, focusing on their latest works.
